How to Move to a Big City for a New Job

Are you moving to a big city and want to make the job easier?

  • See if the new company will do it for you. There’s nothing like having your belongs already packed up and meeting with the moving van at your new place.
  • Keep it as simple as possible. Get rid of what you can before you pack. This is a good time to lose broken or no longer usable stuff. It’s the time to donate anything you haven’t used in at least a year.
  • Organization is the key. If you’re moving on your own, label the boxes with the room the items are going into as well as a short list of what is within the box. Just because the box is labeled “kitchen” doesn’t mean you know if a spatula is in there.
  • Check out the latest Moving Center information on ForRent.com. Get a hold of a Movers Checklist for Chicago apartments or other big city moves to help you through the process.
  • Keep the stress down by taking well-need breaks from working, loading and cleaning. For those who offer to help you through the process, offer food and drink as a thank you.
  • Find a sitter for young children who might be underfoot. Older children and teens can help you not only with packing, but loading.

Moving to a big city for a new job is not only exciting, it takes a lot of work to make the process run smoothly. Step out on the right foot by applying some or all of the ideas above.
